Jala Neti (one of the 6 hatha yoga Kriyas) is a technique of cleansing the nose with the help of warm, salty water. It is used for spiritual and physical health. Jala Neti has a preventive effect against inflammation of the sinuses, ears, throat and nose. Daily performance of this Kriya reduces the risk of colds and allergies. It removes dirt, bacteria and viruses from the upper respiratory tract and is therefore very important at this time of a pandemic. In addition, it will help with various other problems because it stimulates and refreshes the eyes, acts against headaches and migraines, improves concentration and memory, and relieves mental tension.

Technique:

To perform Jala Neti, you need a special water vessel, a Lota, which you can get in yoga centers and pharmacies.

Fill the Lota with warm water (approx. 38 ° C). Usually about 500 ml of water fits in the Lota, so to that quantity add one flat teaspoon of salt. Lean over, insert the vessel’s extension into your left nostril, and slowly bend your head to the right (see picture).

Keep your mouth slightly open and breathe slowly through the mouth. Water should begin to enter the left nostril and exit through the right. Let the water flow freely (half of the water from the Lota into each nostril, or the whole into each nostril) and then repeat the process with the other nostril. If water does not flow into your other nostril, gently adjust the bending of your head. After Jala Neti, you should definitely "dry" your nose, not by blowing into a handkerchief, but with Kapal Bhati Pranayama (cleansing the frontal sinuses). To do this, bend the body forward, inhale through the mouth and exhale strongly and briefly through the nose from both nostrils at the same time. This Pranayama dries the nose, refreshes and raises energy. It cleans the frontal sinuses and has a calming and anti-stress effect.

Note: Jala Neti should be performed in the morning, never before bed.

With Jala Neti, we will get through the cold and allergy season more safely, and in that way we will better protect ourselves from COVID-19.

Practice Jala Neti with us until the next sequel, when we will discuss Yoga Nidra, a yogic anti- stress relaxation technique.
